Farmington Recreation's Youth Basketball Program, sponsored by locally by Dick's Sporting Goods, for youth in grades 1 - 8 generally meets December through early March, pending facility approvals.  For more information on our youth basketball program, please contact our office at recreation@farmington-ct.org or 860.675.2540

Per Connecticut General Statutes, programs that service children ages 7 - 19 who engage in an athletic activity such as an organized game or competition against another team or in preparation for a game or competition or who attend an athletic camp or clinic in which the purpose is to train, instruct, or prepare the participant to engage in an organized athletic game or competition to provide a written or electronic statement on the signs and symptoms of concussions to each athlete and parent/guardian upon registration.  Information can be found by visiting www.cdc.gov/headsup/.

Recreation Basketball:  Grade 1 - COED

  • Farmington Recreation’s 1st Grade Basketball Program is an introduction to the game of basketball.  Clinic-like sessions that will focus on the development of basic skills (dribbling, shooting, etc.) and the team concept.  Farmington Recreation's instructional program places players in an environment that encourages practical training, imagination and self-confidence through age-appropriate coaching while fostering a competitive, professional, and enjoyable atmosphere. Reassurance and care from our coaches allows every player to gain a better understanding of the game of soccer.

Recreation Basketball:  Grades 2 & 3 - Coming Soon

Recreation Basketball:  Grade 4

  • General Rules for Grade 4
    • Boys and Girls in Grade 4 will play with a 27.5” Basketball.
    • Zone and Man-to-Man Defense is permitted.
    • Double-Team is not permitted.
    • Full-Court-Press is only permitted by one player during the last two minutes of each half. Teams shall not press if up by more than 10 points.
  • One-hour practices are held once per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times will not be accepted.
  • Games (4, 10-minute quarters) are played on Saturdays at random times between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Specific schedules will be available 1 - 2 weeks prior to the first game.

Recreation Basketball:  Grades 5 & 6

  • General Rules for Grades 5 & 6
    • Boys in Grades 5 & 6 and Girls in Grades 5 & 6 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.
    • NFHS basketball rules shall apply unless otherwise noted, with exception to the following.
      • Full-Court-Press will only be permitted by one player during the last two minutes of each half. Teams shall not press if up by more than 10 points.
      • Three-Second Rule:  Verbal warnings shall be given for the first offense.  Upon a second offense stoppage of play will occur, which will result in a turnover.
  • One-hour practices are held once per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times will not be accepted.
  • Games (4, 10-minute quarters) are generally played on Saturdays at random times between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Specific schedules will be available 1 - 2 weeks prior to the first game.

  • General Rules for Travel Basketball
    • Boys in Grades 6 - 8 play with an Official Sized (29.5”) Basketball
    • Boys in Grades 4 - 5 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.
    • Girls in Grades 5 - 8 play with an Intermediate Sized (28.5") Basketball.
    • NFHS basketball rules shall apply unless otherwise noted.
  • Practices are generally held twice per week and are determined by our volunteer coaches and based on the space that we have available to us.  Specific requests for practices dates and times may not be accepted. Specific requests for practices dates and times are not accepted.
